Let IFS Become the Psycho-Spiritual Ground of Your Healing Practice and
Your Being in the World
Co-create a community of learners with whom to walk this IFS talk and take your skills to the next level.
You have learned the IFS fundamentals and have been using them with your clients and, perhaps, as a part of your own healing and way of walking through the world. And there are many situations in which you feel stuck, overwhelmed, confused, or triggered.
This course is designed to help you find your way back to Self…
8 Live Teaching Calls · 7 Peer-Practice Sessions · Two Cohorts · October 2026–February 2027 · 27 Participants Maximum
with Dr. David J Stern (IFSI Approved Consultant)
Some Things You May Struggle With
- Getting buy-in from clients about this “parts work” business
- Helping clients successfully make the U-turn to begin in-sight work
- Helping clients find their parts—some parts seem impossible to locate
- Working with polarizations—they are everywhere, and while the protocol is simple, actually working with polarizations can be confusing
- Helping clients unblend from parts—many parts don’t want to unblend and require the right kinds of love and attention from you and your client
- Knowing when and how to use implicit or explicit direct access—and how to transition to fostering the Self-part connection
- Understanding how IFS handles what other traditions call transference and how to allow it to become a powerful dimension of the healing process
- Working with extreme protectors—suicidal and self-harming parts, addiction, and ferocious inner critics, to name a few—both Firefighters and Managers
- Becoming comfortable moving through the healing steps, even when the process feels anything but straightforward
This Course Will Help You Become More Yourself
Through teaching, mini and major demos, lots of practice, and sharing, you will:
- Learn to access and rest in Self when faced with many of the challenges our clients bring to us.
- Learn from the parts your clients trigger in you, so that your parts can guide you back to your Self with more compassion, clarity, and creativity.
- Gain a community of peers and fellow learners who are committed to doing the personal healing work that leads to becoming effective, heart-centered healers.
What You’ll Master
This course is an experiential and intensive journey into the nuances of the IFS process. You will gain proficiency in:
Finding and Fleshing Out Elusive Parts
Skills for helping your clients connect with parts that are hard to identify or resistant to engagement.
Befriending Challenging Protectors
Helping your clients work with and come to love and honor Managers and Firefighters who express themselves through extreme behaviors such as addiction, self-harm, and suicidality.
Working with Complex Polarizations
Teaching clients to effectively mediate internal conflicts to uncover tender underlying exiles.
Mastering Direct Access
Skillfully employing both implicit and explicit direct-access techniques to foster a profound Self-part connection.
Owning the Full Potential of the Healing Relationship
We will explore the interpersonal neurobiological dimensions of the healing relationship from an IFS perspective—and the often-unexplored power of that relationship.
Guiding the Healing Steps
Deepening your comfort and confidence with Witnessing, Redoing, Invitation, and Integration.
What to Expect
Each class will have this basic structure:
- We will begin with a meditation.
- We will have a debrief from the practice groups.
- We will dive into our topic for the day with a brief didactic review, followed by one of the following:
Option 1: Demonstration
- Participants can role-play a client relevant to the topic.
- If their own system is relevant to the topic, they can be the client.
- Breakout groups will discuss the demonstration.
- We will have a thorough debrief and Q&A.
Option 2: Q&A and Demonstrations
- Q&A and mini-demonstration(s) or group demonstrations
Each class will conclude with:
- Preparation for practice groups
- Closing
The flow of the eight full-cohort meetings will, to a great extent, be governed by the life and needs of your cohort. We are co-creating this community and this course. And the following areas, which most IFS practitioners struggle with, will be covered.
Inside the Eight Classes
Classes 2–8
The following topics will use roughly the same class structure and may be presented in any order.
This Is Your Class
You will be asked to bring in the cases you struggle with—the ones that trigger your parts and knock you out of Self and into your therapist parts.
We all have growing edges, places we don’t yet know how to occupy. Your growing edges will help shape the focus of this class and guide you in making the best use of your time in the practice groups.
We are here to share in and learn to love our mutual, perfect imperfection!
This is your class. I will help you make it your own.
For each class, think about:
- A client “tor-mentor” who is related to the particular skill we will be addressing, or…
- A part or parts that you want to get to know better and that relate to the particular skill we will be practicing.

Meet Your Guide: David J. Stern, Psy.D.
David J. Stern, Psy.D., is a certified IFS consultant with years of experience teaching the model to healers from around the world.
He is known for his ability to create a safe learning community for his students. By walking, as much as possible, the IFS talk, he paves the way for students to share and tend to their growing edges—and thereby optimize their learning.
David translates the intricacies of the model into language that makes it easier to embody and to walk the IFS talk. Students leave his classes feeling more confident and compassionate toward themselves as people and healers—and toward their clients.
"David Stern is born to teach. He knows and experiences IFS in mind, body and heart, and conveys the concepts and the techniques from that deep well. He is kind, clear, and connected. I have seen him be part of a group and almost immediately be recognized as a leader, even if he wasn't in that role. People look to him for clarity and ever more expansive views of our inner system and the Self that permeates it."
